Autologous hair transplant: procedure, reference cost & notes

What is an autologous hair transplant?

An autologous hair transplant is a specialized medical procedure designed to restore hair in balding or thinning areas. The procedure uses healthy hair follicles taken directly from the patient's own body, usually from the nape of the neck or behind the ears where hair still grows normally, and transplants them into areas that have lost hair.

Notably, this method only uses the patient's own hair; hair cannot be transplanted from another person because the risk of graft rejection would be very high. This makes autologous hair transplantation a safer and more effective choice than other methods.

Two main techniques: FUE and FUT

Today, two main hair transplant techniques are widely applied at reputable medical facilities in Vietnam.

  • FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation): This method removes a strip of skin containing hair follicles from the nape, then separates individual follicles to transplant into the balding area. This technique leaves a linear scar at the back of the head but costs less and takes less surgical time.
  • FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction): This method extracts individual hair follicles one by one using a specialized device, without removing a wide strip of skin. The process takes more time but leaves fewer scars and produces better cosmetic results. FUE costs more than FUT because it demands more exacting technique and a longer surgical time.

Autologous hair transplant procedure

The autologous hair transplant process includes several important steps, from assessing the patient's regenerative capacity through to surgery and post-operative care.

  • Consultation and assessment: The specialist examines the degree of baldness, hair quality in the donor area, and evaluates the patient's overall health.
  • Preparation: The patient receives local anesthesia to reduce pain. The donor area and the recipient area are thoroughly cleaned.
  • Follicle harvesting: Depending on the technique chosen (FUT or FUE), the doctor extracts healthy hair follicles from a densely haired area.
  • Separation and graft preparation: The follicles are inspected, separated, and prepared for transplantation into the target area.
  • Transplantation: The doctor creates tiny incisions in the balding area and carefully implants each follicle, ensuring the angle and direction match the natural hair growth.
  • Post-operative care: The patient receives detailed instructions on hygiene, medication use, and avoiding strenuous activity during the first few weeks.

Reference cost

Hair transplant costs in Vietnam vary quite widely depending on factors such as the number of follicles needed, the technique used, the reputation of the facility, and the doctor's experience. Generally, reference costs range from 30,000 to 120,000 VND per follicle, or roughly 30 to 100 million VND for a full procedure.

FUE always costs more than FUT due to its more demanding technical requirements. Reputable hospitals and highly skilled doctors tend to charge at the upper end of this range. Before deciding, patients should compare costs across several facilities to find an option that fits their budget.

Important notes

  • Control ongoing hair loss first: A hair transplant does not stop ongoing hair loss. If the patient is still losing hair from other causes (genetics, stress, an underlying condition), those causes need to be treated before or alongside the transplant surgery.
  • Choose a reputable doctor and facility: Hair transplantation requires high skill. Choose hospitals or clinics recognized for head-and-face cosmetic surgery or dermatology.
  • Recovery time: After surgery, transplanted hair may shed in the first 2-3 months (known as 'shock loss'), but this is normal. New hair begins to grow back after 3-4 months, and optimal results are usually seen after 12-18 months.
  • Long-term care: Follow scalp care instructions, avoid strenuous activity, and do not scratch or touch the transplanted area during the first few weeks.
  • Realistic expectations: Although effective, a hair transplant cannot fully restore the original head of hair, especially in cases of severe baldness. Patients should have realistic expectations about the outcome.
